Default Cheapest Smartphone?

Is there a smartphone that doesn't cost as much as a laptop that is decent?

I'm just curious. I guess the only way to get the price down is to get a contract and then pay a monthly subscription ($40+ / mth)?

I wouldn't want a contract if it can be avoided... especially, when most seem to be 3-yrs.

The Samsung ones seem to be the best but the most expensive? The Sony Xperia ones are cheapest but not as recommended? Sony also bought Ericsson but I guess that doesn't mean much for prices, right?

I notice some of these range from $500 to $700 and I think that's crazy but ppl are buying them for that? I thought ppl usually just get a contract to get the price of the device reduced?

I'd like to get one if cheap but not if the only option is $400+ and/or a contract...

I DON'T WANT A BLACKBERRY or any device that is generations old or using older tech.

I prefer an Android device, also. No iPhones obviously...

Bought a galaxy S vibrant for $160 on kijiji. You can get some good deals, and hook it up with no contract. Also the galaxy S is like the most customizable phone once you root it. Very easy to unlock to use with any carrier also.

I'd say that would be your best/cheapest option. Used Galaxy S

Have to buy used to get cheap. iphone 3gs is probably dirt cheap now and it is a good phone.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys!

I'm currently with SO and I got the cheapest phone! It sucks but I already knew that. I'd like to move into the smartphone market some day so I was wondering which cheap one would be adequate. :)

The Galaxy S looks like it might be the best choice? I'm not sure how the others compare (the LG looks interesting) but I'd probably want to go with an Unix-based or Android OS Smartphone... not that the iPhone isn't a good device, though.

Is the Galaxy S Vibrant the same as the S i9000? 'Confused about that...

Are they the same phone but different names in different markets, maybe?

I'd probably want Rogers for the most features? I think I might lose some features going with SO but I'm open to whatever works best...

I don't like Bell or Rogers but I guess it's difficult to have a good carrier w/o either of those (not sure about Telus) if you want full-features since they control all the networks/towers etc. :-/

The galaxy s vibrant is called the i9000m, it's basically the same as the i9000, pretty well all the custom mods work with both. Once it's rooted theres everything you can do from unlocking it to increasing battery life to making it run faster, to overclocking. It's an amazing phone and compared to my iphone 3gs jail broken it's hilariously better. You can change just about anything.

The screen is brilliant and the battery life is great. I can't kill it with a days heavy use.

Once you unlock it you can use it with any carrier, it's probably the easiest phone to unlock

There's also the Galaxy GIO which goes for $150. Fairly easy to unlock as well I believe, and decently spec'd.

That one sucks for any network besides Wind.....

Optimus One, hands down. Once you mod it (Cyanogen 7) it is TRULY amazing. It runs Gingerbread VERY well and that fixes nearly every glitch I have had with mine.

Actually, if you're doing 2G with rogers it works great. But yeah the rogers flavored ones were bad. The AWS ones are much better. He didn't say which carrier though.
