I second the Android recommendation. You can sideload items, you are not tied to just the Apple App Store and there are a lot of choices of hardware. For me, the best feature is that you don't have to use iTunes, which is the most useless piece of crap software there is.
I have an Asus Transformer, but there are a ton of others with Toshiba, Samsung, Acer... different prices and features.
