the lack of an IPS screen on the X1 is the only thing holding me back from pulling the trigger and buying it...

I think I will go with an x220... which i5 processor though? I doubt the jump in performance between the i5-2520m (2.5ghz) vs i5-2540m (2.6ghz) would be noticeable in day-to-day usage.

There's actually not TOO big of a difference.

Compare: Intel® Core) VS Intel® Core)

You only gain .1GHz, even on turbo. I'd save the extra $$$ :)

Hey man, from what I'm seeing your buying the x220.

Take it from me, upgrade the HDD through them. Get the 320GB 7200rpm for ~50$ it's worth it. It's not mentioned a lot but this laptop only accepts 7mm high HDDs compared to the standard 9.5mm ones. Trust me, sourcing it out and shipping was more expensive than what they ask.

The fingerprint reader is a nice little extra. Even when computer is off, scan finger and it takes you directly to your desktop. Upgrade the wireless adapter, it's worth it. I took the Centrino one (the middle model) and it's twice as fast as the basic one.

Upgraded my RAM myself to 8GB for 50$, so good call on that. I got the 9cell battery and it's wonderful.

I'm in love with this laptop. Had it for a month now. Any other questions shoot my way.

I took all of your advice except I am going to stick with the 6-cell battery. I might buy the ultrabay/battery slice thing or a second battery later on, but 9.5 hours battery life from the 6-cell should be sufficient for now :)

Just a heads up, with the 9cell I get a solid 7 hours of HD playback and 10 hours of school work. So I would be a little more conservative with those 6cell numbers. The battery slice does look like a nice addition but so far 9cell has been more than enough.

As an early X-mas gift for yourself you can look into Intel's 310 mSATA SSD since you didn't take the WAN card you have a free PCIe slot that will accept mSATA. I got the 80GB version for my OS and the 320 HDD for my files.

The X220 also handles light gaming really well. Playing games like Braid, SuperMeat Boy, Torchlight and Limbo perfectly. I'm scared to try Starcraft 2 and ruin my productivity at school.

The IPS screen is also a delight, makes me hate my desktop's TN panel now ..

Anyways enjoy your new computer!

I saw a video review of the x220 with the 9-cell battery and it really sticks out at the back, whereas the 6-cell is flush with the laptop shell.

thanks for the help though.
