Default New Laptop for University?

I'm looking at buying a new laptop for University but I'm pretty lost on what to get. I'm looking at spending around 700 + tax (I'm willing to go up to around 750-770 if it's really worth it) The only things that I'm really looking for in it is portability since I'll be commuting to school, a good battery life, and a dedicated graphics card if that's within my price range. All shopping will be done at NCIX so I will be able to pricematch. Any help is appreciated.

I know you mentioned portablility, so I will ask roughly what size are you looking for? 15.6", 14", 13.3", 12", etc. I ask because that can make a big difference on what you buy.

IMO 14" is the maximum for "portability". Anything beyond that starts to get clunky and heavy.

However, only 15.6" laptops are decently spec'd and cheap, so you'll have to make some sacrifices or get some more money.

And I would definitely wait until it's closer to September, or shortly after classes start. Usually better deals to be had during that time. I highly doubt you need it for the first couple weeks anyways.

Again, I will mention the ASUS B-series. There is no better out there in this price range.

Also note the 3 year hardware AND battery warranty. :)

Take Flight With ASUS B Series Notebooks

And MATTE screen.

Since it hasn't been mentioned before... I'll second this particular point, and suggest that it's critical.

Having just recently purchased a laptop with a glossy screen (and one that can't really be changed from the looks of it) I'm regretting the purchase and will never again purchase a laptop unless it's got a matte screen.

I bought a Vaiz Z with a "semi matte" screen and ended up buying one of SGP's Steinheil AG series anti glare films. One of the best on the market IMO and I HIGHLY suggest you look into it as long as you can find one that supports you model.

Thanks SKYMTL, I'll check it out. I was going to order a replacement screen for my HP Pavilion, but then realised that this model has a glass cover for the panel, and so far haven't seen anything to suggest that a new panel will do anything about the glare off of it.
