I had to remove the backplate, apply some fresh AS5 to the heatsinks and buy a Zalman 3000 cooler (which I'm stuck with ATM ) just to keep the temps of both Quad and 5870M in check while gaming some BFBC2 (max. settings, mind you).

I'm seriously looking at that MSI and trying to find a reason why I shouldn't pick it up at that price. I don't think I'll find anything even close, and the sale ends on the 23'rd.

i agree, i can find some i7s laptops and ones with better resultion for that price but i see nothing with a gpu that matches a 5870m

That Zalman 3000 cooler does wonders, dropped my folding temps by 10c from the zalman 1500 cooler I had before.

I'm happy with the 480m in this laptop, so far been playing Eve at 2560x1600 on my 30" connected to the laptop and its rock solid, I'd imagine the 580m is similar if nvidia's naming scheme continues as usual.
Edit:whoops you were looking at the 540m.

Yeah, temps, and concern about MSI laptop build quality are holding me back. I've had such a great experience (8 yrs and still going) with my compaq desktop replacement that I'd be very disapointed if my laptop didn't last much more than 2 yrs

Heh... a 480 or 580 would be well above my price range. From the looks of it, a 540M would probably be the range I end up with if I end up going with an Nvidia GFX laptop. Anything above that (barring the MSI that's on sale, and I'm having second thoughts) is going to add $300 - $400 minimum to the cost.

Ah well.... I suppose I'll just keep my eyes open and see what comes up. Thanks for the suggestions folks!

what about this one.

ASUS N53SV-A1

While it's no G53 it does meet the 1k criteria pre-tax.

Newegg.ca - ASUS N53JF-XE1 Notebook Intel Core i5 460M(2.53GHz) 15.6" 4GB Memory DDR3 1066 500GB HDD 7200rpm BD Combo NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M

Possibly? GPU is probably a tad weak for gaming though I'm guessing compared to the other choices you have thus far. Has the eSATA and USB3 though along with Bluray (should you need that).

And no tacky LEDs either ;)

That's a contender as I can PM it down to $999, but I'd have to compare it to the dell XPS I could put together. Looks awfully damn close to the specs I built there for around the same price.

As I stated above... I can get a quad 540M Dell for $999, and I think if I'm going to settle on a 425m (or similar) I'll just grab whatever current AMD quad with dedicated Graphics that's on sale at FS or Staples the week I buy. Blue ray has no appeal for me, however I do like the full HD res that it offers.

Thanks for the suggestions (even if they aren't my choice.... ;) ).

I've been eyeing this one over at staples..... (not completely sure if the link will work as they've got some kind of wierd "where are you located/ postal code crap going on for their online flyer urls....)

Staples=&=&=&=

HP Pavilion dv7-4260ca Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Shopping.CA&

$800 for 17" quad AMD PHII and 1G 6550 (gotta check the "dedicated" memory part as there's some confusion in the descriptions).

What do you folks think?

that HP looks like a solid unit!

I haven't heard anything on performance of the new PHII mobile chips, but it looks more than adequate.

HD 6550 looks more than capable of playing modern games, albeit some of them may need reduced quality. Here's more info on the card AMD Radeon HD 6550M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

look like a nice laptop with high res but if your really serious about gaming on the thing i still think you should get the msi you had. Nothing is going to touch that 5870 mobile in that price range. That msi would out perform my gaming rig no problem with the same resolution i use though i guess thats not saying much
