Arrow Which laptop is better?

Hey,

I need a laptop for school and gaming. These are the three i think are good:

1. HP 17": The AMD Athlon II Dual Core N330 for $799

2. HP 15": The Intel core i5 430M for $899.

3. HP 17": The Intel Core i5 430M for $999.

All three have a problem in my opinion.

The first one is the processor, will it be good enough for gaming and how is that processor compared to the Core i3's and Core i5's. Is it better or worse? Is it worth the $200 i'd save?

The Second one is the video card. It only says "Intel HD" as it's video card. Will this be good enough for me to game on (e.g MW2, Crysis etc.)? Also, how would this video card be compared to against ATI Radeon HD Mobility 5470?

The Third one is the price. I am paying $200 extra basically for the processor (compared to the first one). This one has the Intel core i5. Is it worth the $200 i'm paying extra.

I saw AMD Athlon II Dual core N330 processor has L2 cache of 1 MB and Intel Core i5 430M has a L3 cache of 3 MB. Will it make a difference in the performance? If you need, here is a comparison between the two processors.

Lastly,Which laptop would you recommend me to buy?

All help will be appreciated.

Thanks

I would recommend this laptop instead for gaming. NCIX.com - Buy MSI GX640-260US Intel Core i5 450M 4GB 500GB 15.4IN WSXGA+ Radeon HD5850 Windows 7 Premium Notebook - GX640-260US In Canada.

Much better graphic card and higher screen resolution. Also, I assume battery life isn't a concern since you want a gaming notebook.

Processor: AMD mobile processors are ass, it's not worth the $200 you will save... not by a long shot!
Intel HD: Intel's onboard graphics has improved, but not enough to play Crysis on IMO. (i have NOT tested this theory). It's very possible the 5470 would kick the intel graphics chips ass in a benchmark.

Laptops vary wildly, try to stick with an intel processor and discrete graphics if you are doing any gaming.

I won't be using it ONLY for gaming, i will also be using for programming and school.

But you were saying that AMD is not worth it? I should spend the extra $200 and go for the core i5?

I've said this a million times. Laptops are a hard thing to recommend to people. Why? - because it's like buying a keyboard or computer case, everyone has their favorites. Do you want a touchpad, or one of those nub things for a mouse pointer.. do you want a full sized keyboard with numberpad - will your hands cramp after typing on it + is it comfortable to type on?
Best thing to do is find a laptop online, go in to the big box stores and test it out. I can't describe how many people bought netbooks online when they first came out, only to try and return them because their (original) keyboards suck.

As for your choices, going on specifications alone.. you have an inconsistency. Screen size. You want to open a 17" laptop in class, or when you're out and about? (or in my case, on a plane) I usually consider 17's if I want a portable media station - ie: to watch dvd's on when i'm in a hotel room, or if I want to replace a desktop. If I want a laptop (to you know.. put on your lap) than size matters - I don't want something heavy, big.. and want it to have a decent battery life.
That being said, out of your choices, i'd probably go with the i5 @ $899 w/ the 15" screen.. but would want to take it for a test drive first.

I get all that but what about the processor?

Is the AMD Athlon II Dual core good or atleast comparable to Core i3s and Core i5s?

Drop the HP crap and get this one instead.

Good CPU, better video card, good hard drive 2 years warranty ( first years is accidental dammage ) Good service, unlike HP.
NCIX.com - Buy ASUS K52JR-X2 Intel Core i3 350M 4GB 640GB 15.6IN HD Radeon HD5470 HDMI Windows 7 Premium Notebook - K52JR-X2 In Canada.

+1

Give me a shout if you're interested in my MSI GX640-260US. I'll most likely sell it for how much I got it at the NCIX grand opening. Or I'll be returning it

Based on this Laptop reliability survey: ASUS and Toshiba win, HP fails -- Engadget I wouldn't suggest HP.
