looks like your budget is in the $600 range. That is a minefield full of very sad performing AMD based CPU laptops. Stick with something Intel based and you will be fine.

Well, I suggest you to go look at them first hand if possible. It hard to judge built, screen, keyboard qualities without testing it first hand. With that said, anything Intel will do.

Lenovo is generally a good brand but it's hard to say about a $500 laptop just what kind of build quality to expect. Having said that, if your mom is going to be using it mainly at home and not traveling you don't need to be too concerned about build quality imo, so somethign from Lenovo would be a good buy.

Will she taking it places? If not, don't get a netbook. The screen is too small.

If it will be at home most of the time and plugged in, you might consider a larger screen so 15.4" and up.

Consider Asus, too, as they have some laptops in the $600 range but maybe not many choices.

Also, I think some Sony Vaio models are around there but if you can afford a bit more, I think they have some i5 models.

I don't know about the Lenovos. I only like the Thinkpads and not too sure about Ideapads or whatever they are calling them.

I think Asus and MSI are the best out of the lot and Acer laptops are cheaper but don't usually receive good ratings quality wise. Be sure to inspect any potential laptop in person if possible.

i thought that lenovo is part of ibm... but the battery life is pretty low... 4 hours... (or 3 hours for acer and other links above)... honestly i would pick lenovo (duo core at price)...

yes sometime, she will carry outside... depend on her schedule...

i never be fan of sony (msi, asus and dell too) but the price and feature are reasonable then i am okay with it...

Yes lenovos are eseentially IBMs. 4 hours is not low battery power for a 6 cell battery on a 15" laptop. If you are comparing it too some kind of ultra low power netbook than yes it's low, but I will be VERY impressed if that lenovo's battery actually lasts 4 hours lol.
