Default Laptop

Now i can't decide which way to go. I am thinking about one of the following 3 units.

1. Dell Vostro V13
2. Asus UL50VT
3. Lenovo T400

All are around the same specs the lenovo is the most expensive but there is a %30 off sale so it's around $1000. The Vt is nice because it has a 4500 and 210m for when i need the power. The vostro looks nice but is not available with 64bit windows 7. The only thing i didn't like about the asus is the touchpad (i tried a similar one) and found it doesn't glide as easy. Basically what i am going to be using this for is when i am out and about or on a trip. It needs to be able to run Photoshop Elements and handle some basic editing (i am not talking 130 layer graphics) the average picture size is around 6-8MB in file size. The other thing i was thinking about was changing out the HDD for a 64 or 128GB SSD (probably a Partriot TORX)

Thanks.

LCD Guy....I was in the same situation last week to purchasing this G51J...the things I wanted in priority:

1. Windows 7 64 Bit (no way I was going with either Vista or a 32 Bit OS)
2. Speedy processor
3. 4GB RAM (minimum...Dual Channel will speed things up)
4. No larger than a 15.5" (17" to damn big for me n portability)
5. Decent GPU for casual gaming
6. Decent price....lets face it..soon as you step up to "decent GPU" the price escalates considerably....

With the above specs in mind..seemed I was looking in 1.2 - 1.5k price range, with my Max set at 1.5k.....
I did find a couple of good deals that included speedy Duo Core CPU / 4GB Dual Channel 800 Mhz RAM...GT 240M....BUT friggin Vista!!! So..NO!

And yes, this Notebook cames with 2 x 320 GB Seagate 7200 Drives, I'll be replacing one with a 128GB SSD in the New Year

Well if you think you might want to play a game occasionally then the Vostro is out. it's a very nice machine but lacks any game ability. The T400 is a rock solid machine imo. With the C2D Penryn and HD3470 you can do some gaming on medium settings and have plenty of power to spare for Photoshop etc... The Asus will give you great battery life but you are going to lose some CPU prowess. If super long battery time is not a concern than I would go T400. If you are looking for great battery performance than the Asus.

So i pulled the trigger and got the Asus. despite the issue i had with the track pad. I was able to pricematch it (pending approval) to $859. So after it was all said and one taxes, shipping, no dead pixel it came to $971. And now i need to save up for an SSD so i can see how much battery life i can squeeze out of this puppy . I'll post some pics when it arrives. (if it ships today that should be tomorrow )

/Ninja'd!
...below is moot now.

Oh... I should also add that for traveling the smaller form factor is a plus too. So if that's important to you than the T400 wins again... as digging out a 15.6" lappy and using it on a crowded plane or commuter train can often be a pain.

Edit: Congratz on your purchase. Let us know how you like it!

i don't travel alot but i didn't like the 14.1" size i prefer the 13.3 or 15.6" formats. But thanks anyway. But still even after i get the ssd later this will still be cheaper than my first laptop ($1800 bucks, the Compaq R3000 Series for those that remember when A64 First came out)
