Default Portable Hard-drives and Netbooks

I just bought an ASUS 1101ha during NCIX's Black Friday sale. I'd like an external hard drive to go with it. I heard that not all notebooks/netbooks have a powered bus. If this is true, that means I can't use a usb powered hard drive right?
Does the 1101ha have a powered bus? Is a good idea to get a usb hard drive or should I get something with it's own power supply? I like the idea of plug and play with out being tied to an outlet, especially with a netbook.

That model supports SDHC memory cards. They currently hold up to 32 GB, with the potential to hit 2 TB in the near future. Not the most cost-effective solution per GB, but the ultimate in portability- no A.C.. Just a thought. Not sure how large you need etc.

I just had a flashback to my first HDD purchase. It was 10 MB for about 2 grand.
