My System Specs

Default A Netbook for a new computer user

So my mom decided she wants a netbook so she "can use the email" and "look at stores websites". Pretty basic stuff.

Battery life is a bonus but I doubt it would realistically need to last longer than a few hours (7 hours + would be ideal).

I don't wanna get her a really budget one. Even though she hardly ever uses computers she'll still want it to be fast.

So far I'm leaning towards the ASUS 1005HA (better version of the 1000HE for the same price). I'd rather not get an Acer (had a couple bad experiences with their products in the past - but let's not turn this into a debate) but if there's a better hp or LG or whatever I'd certainly consider it.

Any input you guys have would be appreciated. Won't be buying it for another couple weeks anyway.

TIA

If you go with the Asus EEE 1000H or 1000 you could pick up one of these batteries and extend your battery life to ~10 hrs.

In my experience, netbooks may promise battery life but fall far short even during basic tasks. If your mother will be using the netbook to surf the internet you will probably see that 7 hour battery life reduced to ~4.5 to 5 hours.

My father actually brought up a good point about laptops ni general the other day and I think it would be valid here as well: avoid glossy screens. I personally can't stand them and that goes double for people of *ahem* advancing age who are particularly sensitive to glare.

That's a really good point about the matte screens, especially with all the windows in this house. As far as battery life, she will likely use it while it's plugged in the vast majority of the time so that shouldn't be too much of an issue now that I think about it. Even if the "10.5 hours" advertised is nothing close to what you really get.

As for the 1000 vs 1005 they seem to be almost exactly the same price for roughly the same features so I would likely get the 1005 (either with BT or not) over the 1000.

What I would like to find out is if the 1005HA is the netbook to get. Is there something else out there that's fast enough and cheaper? maybe with a matte screen?

I have the 1005HA. The basic model for $389. It has been fantastic! And best of all, NO glossy screen. Battery life is as advertised, get 8+ hours when on eco mode, which is still plenty fast. The screen is great!

I picked up a MSI wind u100 for my wife and it is great. It came with a 6 cell and a bonus 9 cell for free for $419. Screen is matte and plenty bright. No issues at all with speed. Keyboard is also a decent size.
