Default laptop processor

i wish to understand about laptop process better... (i mean if i want to help my frind to find right one)

please tell me what those processors suit for?

intel

atom - very basic such as word, internet and simple images... how about gps or simple image recording (camera)? for grandma or business tools?

core 2 solo - ? --little powerful than atom ? more for student?

core 2 duo/quad - obviously more powerful and more waste battery... suit to media or game (not!)

amd

Sempron -?

Athlon - rivil to solo?

turion - rivial to duo/quad... less poweful?

of course i know the price is different... and are all intel processors more powerful than amd except battery life?

I think that the processors are limited to what ever motherboard you are using and as for the power and what not it also all depends on what you are going to be using the laptop for.

Better way to approach this subject is:

What do you want to do on your laptop?
What's your budget?
What size laptop?
Will you be carrying it around a lot?

for my friend

What do you want to do on your laptop? ; general task such as surfing and pictures ( with paint.net)... maybe play a movie
What's your budget? cheap would be nice
What size laptop? don't matter as long as its good decent price...
Will you be carrying it around a lot? probably yes...

but my point, i want to know what each processor is for... i know nothing about amd... >_>;

Atom's are for netbooks generally and are not as powerful as their big brothers. AMD is cheaper and generally not as powerful as their comparable Intel's. Semprons and Core Solos are lower cost CPU's good for general tasks but not anything really intensive if you want your machine to make it snappy. Turion X2 and Core 2 Duo are mainstream good for anything. Quad Core on a laptop is ridiculous expensive right now and not worth it unless you are doing very intensive workstation tasks with software that utilizes multiple cores.

And yes size does matter if you are going to carry it around a lot. Carrying a 17" laptop around everyday is a PITA. :P

thank you for good information... almost like what i thought...

just curious.. why not atom? i thought its useful for simple task or tool such as chat, dictionary, surfing the internet, game from internet (or low budget game)... i also wonder if atom can use as gps unit? and probably solo or sempron is pointless to buy...?

i still want to know ALL intel cpu is better than amd AT same class ( like solo vs sempron, etc)

Atom is fine for what you mentioned. You can even game on some netbooks, check this out.
Netbook Gaming - Features at GameSpot

Yes currently any Core 2 Duo CPU will out perform the same speed Athlon or Turion.

Also should be noted that Intel uses less power than AMD too IIRC.

I'd go with a Core 2 Duo, even if its just for basic tasks. A 13.3" or 14.1" size would be perfect IMO. Though 15.4" are cheaper, they are quite a bit bigger/heavier, so depends on what your friend feels up to carrying around.

I have a Dell XPS m1330 which is great for carrying around to school, at school and then home. Small, lightweight, yet still packs enough power to get anything done. With a T8100 + Intel X3100 graphics + 9-cell battery, I can do like 5-6h of light tasks, and about 3h of Half Life 2

As for the Atoms, my mom has an Aspire One which is great for daily stuff but for me the keyboard and screen are just too small to actually be able to use it during class taking notes or trying to write a report on it. Unless you have tiny hands that is.
