Default $1000 laptop for student?

Stepson has a friend who's looking for a decent laptop for school & some online gaming. Problem is, his budget is only around $1,000 so I imagine that limits the options substantially on the gaming side of things.

Since I have absolutely no idea when it comes to laptops I figured I'd ask here & see which ones are recommended for the above needs.

For whatever reason he doesn't want a Dell, so those are ruled out.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I can not give you specific brands/models, but go for the fastest cpu and gpu. The hard drive, ram, optical drive and sometimes wireless can be upgraded cheaper by the user. Even the cpu can be upgraded, while most laptops can not upgrade the gpu. Just a few things to keep in mind. Good luck.

I was going to suggest Dell since you can easily customize it to your liking. Though personally gaming laptops are over-rated. And to get a proper one, you need to spend well over $1000 and forget about running on a battery.

Maybe this:
Future Shop: Computers: Laptops: HP HDX 16.0" Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 2.13GHz Laptop (X16-1155CA) - Future Shop Exclusive
Has a 9600M GT though its $200 over.

I personally went with a Dell XPS m1330 for college. Got a 9-cell battery and Intel X3100 graphics with 4GB RAM and T8100 CPU. Can do like 5-6h on battery with light tasks. Can play HL2 for like 2h+ (still had like 30% battery left when I was done). It's also small and lightweight which is a godsend when you have to carry it around all day.

Laptop deals are shit right now. I would not go for a 16" laptop for school. You want MAXIMUM 15.4"... trust me. Unless your student is like 6'5" 240lbs and doesn't mind hauling around a big machine.

I will try to take a look around tonight and see if I can spot anything but a quick scan over BB, FS and Dell shows lame deals atm.

Anything you can game on with a mid-range GPU will cost at least $900 on sale. But up here you are more likely to pay $1000-$1200.

Models to look out for:

HP DV5 (Staples had some w/9600GT for $1100)
Toshiba A300 (same as above)
Asus N50

That OCZ is a rebranded Compal, and there's nothing wrong with that... nice find! For <$1000 that's a pretty sweet machine. Does Windows come with it? I can't tell.

Here's a detailed guide/review on it. But with the HD3650 option.

no OS - but as a student an OS can be had from $0.00 to cheap depending upon the school and program (ie. Waterloo & Guelph, Engineering & Computer Science students pay nothing)

The specs in that link say WXGA screen not WUXGA. And I've seen these at BB. There's no way I'd carry one of these around everyday in a backpack or satchel. They're built pretty cheaply and are rather large to really be considered mobile. This is more a desktop replacement imo. It's a good deal, but I would be weary about longevity using this machine "in the field".
