Default Salvaging a Broken Laptop

so my laptops busted, screens destroyed, and some panels have come out.
Laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1501

The laptop was smashed, it was on when it was smashed and it immediately turned off after it was smashed. Tried turning it on but then I saw some smoke rise as I tried to turn it on.

Visible Trauma:
-Screen is cracked very badly, looks like spiderwebs on the screen.
- Panel where the power button has fallen off

Do you guys think it would be possible to just remove the screen completely and use it like a desktop? Only problem is, it wont turn on...

I think I may just salvage the battery, HDD and Ram. I think I can salvage the CPU but not the GPU.

Any advice guys? I'm sure someones had a broken laptop before

Doubt the warranty is any good. Bought the thing October 2007.

sounds pretty bad
take it out of the casing and see if theres any damage to the internal components.
Try to piece of back together, if u have another laptop or know somebody that does, try to test each component to see if everything works

lol, so I called dell. they said it would cost $400 to repair the laptop, I sorta laughed and then said thx for your time lol. I think I paid $400 for this laptop when I bought it a year and 5 months ago.

Just opened the thing, lots of components, some I can't recognize. Wonder if I can salvage the wifi. I seriously want to salvage the diskdrive, since the one in my rig kinda blows.

Wish I could salvage the card reader cuz it looks pretty neat lol. Gonna take off the heat sink now wish me luck guys!.

Also, the HSF looks like it has a loong peice of copper. Might beable to sell it, copper is expensive right?

I've gota show you guys some pics of this stuff, it just looks so neat! lol

is it possible to make an HTPC with a laptop CPU? I've pretty much got most of the components I would need.

No, it's not, laptop cpus are still the pin style and are specific to laptop boards. Only high end systems that use desktop processors use a 775 retention system.

By the sounds of it the system is junk spare the HDD, ram, cpu, optical drive if its removable. I'd take it to a place that specializes in laptop repairs, Dell quotes you when they haven't seen the system and it could be an easy fix, though by the sounds of it, it's too fargone to fix before you would be into ew system territory.

Pics would help if you can, if the body of the system is easily fixed then you can just hook up an external monitor.

heres some pics

The inside of my computer

The two chips to the right of the fan are the CPU and GPU

my smashed screen

My HSF

hdd

WLan chip

there was also a modem chip thing, but the pic didn't turn out well

Update: I put the peices back together, I realised that the computer wasn't turning on because the cable connecting the screen to the mobo had popped out.
I duno if this is bad or good, but I basically just popped the HSF back ontop of the CPU, my cpu wont over heat will it? The gpu just had some weird foam paper between gpu and HSF lol.
Anyways, with everything back together I tried to turn on the comp and it did actually boot. Everything sounded normal, but of course I couldn't verify anything, since I had no screen. I tried connecting the laptop to an external monitor, but the external monitor didn't detect anything...

I might try again, with a diff monitor

only useful thing out of a smashed laptop is POSSIBLY the hdd if it didn't get damaged.

Otherwise they are junk.
