Default E-Books back in vogue?

They've been trying to push these for years, but are these the first we've seen with the actual "e-paper" tech in them?

NCIX.com - Canada's Premier Computer Store - Great Technology, Service and Selection.

I read a lot, but I can't see wanting to go this route... Seeing Sony at the helm makes me think they want to corner the market on the written word (and slap DRM on them :) ) so that we can't lend our favorite books out any more. :)

Never going to happen for me, there is nothing like holding a real book/magazine. I've lost track of how many books I have and they are not leaving while I'm still breathing...

We already have fairly wide acceptance of the "Star Trek" model through PDAs, but use of those is mostly limited to single pages of information at a time, or for easy contact information. I can't see somebody wanting to work their way through 300+.

Maybe for use as a technical manual with a good indexing system. I can see taking one of these out to an aircraft for reference (I think that was the original plan for the new military MHP), but they'd have to be able to stand up to a lot of abuse.

Meh. E-ink blows. The reason it blows for reading is NO FREAKIN BACKLIGHT! I love my little 12 inch tablet PC. It can be pitch dark and I can read a book perfectly. Whereas those e-inks need a light on to see the screen. To me its a big step back from the RCA Reb 1100 which I own as well.

Now I admit I'm biased. I can't stand reading a dead tree book. No adjustable font AND $$$. Whereas Baen.com is 4-5 books a month for under $20....with NO drm!

Is there a listing somewhere of which books are available in e-book format?

Yes I find that too, even with a nice LCD screen I could never read a recreational book. Newspapers and books, articles related to work I could handle. I'd need a copy and paste function though to take notes and embed hyperlinks within the notes to salient points in articles etc..

EDIT: I like this though but my hands are just too damn big for all these tiny touch screens keypads

If you are into Sci-fi Baen books (Baen Books Science Fiction & Fantasy - Home Page) has been publishing ALL their books in dead tree and ebook formats (LIT, RFT, mobile, Sony, etc) since 2001'ish. Recently a bunch of other book publishers (TOR, etc) have linked up w/ them to make some out of print one available.
