My System Specs

Default Acer Aspireone AOA150-1249

Looking at getting this for my mom for Christmas.
Acer Aspireone AOA150-1249

One question though, is it possible to put XP on it if she doesn't like Linux? Or could I put Ubuntu on it even?

It seems like the Distro they use is kind of lacking so I just want like a "full" OS on it that's easy enough to use.

You should be able to install windows, all the drivers you might want are available online.

If you shop around for just a few $$ more $380 I think at Staples you can get the version with XP installed.
That way you have a licensed OEM copy of XP because going legit the OS would cost 50% of the machine total purchase price.

Ubuntu is what my co-worker put on his solid state aspire one, so should be not issue there at all.

You know...I got the 8GB SSD model, as well as upgraded to 1.5GB ram.... I gotta say...I dont use it often because it is VERY slow in a windows XP environment. I am going to isntall Linux back on it when I get a chance. And the one I have is the model with the faster of the 2 Solid State drives, Samsung I think is the manufacturer.

Well I have XP already so cost isn't an issue. Looking to spend the least possible though...

Yeah I don't want SSD just 'cause it's limited in space and they don't perform all that well (the cheaper ones). That's why I want the HDD model.

So Linux runs alright but XP is slow? And Linux as in the one it comes with or some other distro?

Yea I ran the stock one it came with, and it is perfectly fine for most use. I might try some other flavors, not entirely sure if it will work, but its worth a try!

Out of curiosity, does it have like a full desktop? Not just that button screen with all the basic task. And does it have some kind of package manager to easily install additional programs. Basically something like Ubuntu, easy to use, easy to install things, etc.

Not sure what it comes with by default, but it has to play XviD files too (so I guess VLC or something similar). So if it doesn't come with a form of media player, I'll need to install that too I guess.

Well I grabbed the one at NCIX that's on sale. 1GB RAM, XP, 6-cell for $409.99. Quite a good deal IMO compared to Futureshop that wants $399.99 for the 3-cell model.

If XP runs as bad as Cptn said, then I'll probably look into putting Ubunutu on it (seeing as I don't know much about Linux so might as well stick to an easy distro).

Hmm, I know I installed or setup some form of ulocker thing that gave much more control over the OS, forget what it was called though. Found it online when the Aspire one first came out. Really I havent used the thing in ages. Mainly just when travelling.
