My System Specs

Default Gateway MD7811U Review

Picked up the Gateway MD7811U today from Future Shop for $699.99. After taxes, it was basically $800.

Specifications:
Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 @ 2.2GHz
4GB of DDR2 RAM
500GB Western Digital Hard Drive
ATI Mobility Radeon HD3650 w/ 512MB dedicated (HDMI out + VGA)
Mobile Intel PM45 Express Chipset
Intel WiFi Link 5100
6-cell battery
1.3MP Webcam
Still has dial-up modem too!

Thoughts:
Overall it feels very solid (thanks to the alloy unibody chassis), and the fit and finish seems superb, especially for a laptop at this price-point. Only minor flaw, the leather insert piece on the top is a bit floppy, meaning you can push it in and it flexes out. Display model was the same though.

Viewing angle wise, a bit lacking if your standing up while using it since the screen has limited tilt due to it's design. Though if you're using it on a desk, all is fine. The hinges on the screen are a bit stiff too, but it could just be due to it being new. However when you open the screen, the chassis of the laptop pulls up with it, so you need 2 hands. Compared to my XPS m1330 where the base stays planted when opening the screen. Otherwise, pretty typical 15.6" screen, 1366x768 resolution (aka 16:9) with a glossy finish. I believe it also has LED backlighting.

Lighted touch controls are snazzy, and it's basically all glossy black on the inside other than the palm rest area which is a brushed aluminum effect (don't believe it has any metal though). Should help to reduce those finger prints to some extent, but the media controls are all glossy.

The top is also very glossy, and is of burgundy colour. Doesn't look that bad, but it wouldn't be my top choice. And as previously mentioned, has a faux leather stripe down the center with a silver Gateway logo.

Software:
The preinstalled software was kept to a minimum bloat wise. Really just Norton 360 trial that was running. Only has Vista Home Premium x64 SP1 though, so I suppose it's a bit dated since SP2 isn't included. Comes with a free Windows 7 upgrade like all new computers currently do.

Performance:
Actual performance is yet to be seen as I'm currently installing Windows 7 to it. Though the brief time I used Vista on it, things were responsive.

I can say that the WEI score in Vista x64 SP1 is:
Processor: 5.1
RAM: 5.1
Graphics: 5.6
Gaming Graphics: 5.0
Hard Disk: 5.6

I'm glad you like the laptop! It seems like it is a pretty solid preforming laptop for the price.

Upon second evaluation, it actually is metal of sorts, so I'm guessing it's real brushed aluminum.

Windows 7 runs fine, had to install the card reader though. Used the Vista x64 drivers off Gateway's site. Also needed the touch-pad driver like usual to get scrolling functionality and what not.

Also have NFS Undercover running on it too. Roughly medium-low settings, though could probably push medium across the board. Seemingly plays fine, so I'd guess 30FPS+. Only 1280x720 though since that's all NFS supports, but it looks fine since it's a 16:9 screen after all.

Another note, it seems the screen has built in scaling of sorts. It displayed 1:1 for 1024x768 but it scales 1280x720 to fullscreen.

Battery life wise, well I'll go with roughly 2 hours, but of course it varies hugely on usage and what settings you use. Can't expect much from a 6-cell.

Here's the Windows 7 x64 WEI:

Bit higher than Vista, but I'm guessing that mainly due to having the latest Catalyst drivers. Vista only have 8.7 I believe, where as I have 9.9 running in 7.

Around 2 hours. It's only a 6-cell so not much can be expected from it.
