I had one using P45 chipset and Q6600. However, I was using the spec Gigabyte board that they recommended. It worked pretty well until I upgraded to Ivy Bridge built which is a bit buggy in terms of audio and USB 3.0.

I got parts for my g4 from these guys I wanted to mod it into a htpc but wife won't allow it. So I upgraded ram
refurb mac parts

Snow Leopard works really well on just a C2D E8400 and 4 GB of RAM. A Geforce 8400GS or Radeon HD 5450 should give you the acceleration you need for QE/CI and some apps. VLC doesn't work without OpenGL acceleration, and QE requires OpenCL.
