Default unknown file taking up large space

Hi Guys,
so I used Disk Inventory X app, works great! tells you exactly which files are taking up the most space.

anyways I found a ~9GB file under the path : Macintosh HD/private/var/vm/sleepimage
I have no idea what it is, can I delete it to gain 9GB back ?

thanks .

I'm no Mac expert by any means, but I'm guessing that's similar to the hiberfil.sys file in Windows. Basically a copy of all the RAM data so your machine can sleep and resume near-instantly

JD is right, it's the mac equivalent of the hiberfil.sys in windows. You can delete it, but it will just get recreated
