Posting from my Beige G3 in AT case.
433MHz G3 1MB L2 (350MHz stock), 448MB RAM(I have more waiting but the box is a hassle to get to atm), Radeon 7000 64MB, 80GB HDD, USB, etc
Not the fastest thing ever but I have dedicated it to OS 9 so it is fast enough for most things and I dedicate my G4 in ATX case to OS X. :P

Why aren't you running OSX at least? It should run up to 10.4 w/o any real issues. That is as long as you have 128MB of ram.

The fastest version of OS X for that iMac is 10.4
I have tried running 10.4 on a 400MHz iMac with both 128MB and 640MB of RAM. It is not that great. Usable, yes, but it is just "bleeggh, why am I doing this?"
Though, the dual CPU 500MHz G4 towers I hear can run OS X fairly decently. :P

LP, try out Classilla. It is latest Mac OS 9 Mozilla with bits and pieces of newer stuff backported.

Heh, it was more of a "Holy shit I got it working" moment. Last time I used a Mac was in early grade school. Probably gonna just get these updates to 9.2.2 on there and call it a day tomorrow. It really has no use, but my boss wants it for herself so whatever.

Now do the same with The NetBSD Project instead

While not BSD, a few years ago I stuck Debian 2.2 (2.4.1 kernel) on my PowerBook 160(released 1992) for a little while.. 25MHz 68030, 10MB RAM, 320MB 2.5" SCSI HDD.

With linux it was incredibly useless, it took soooooo long to boot it was insane. Just whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. >_<
So then I put Mac OS back on and it was quite usable for period correct tasks.

Now, you are going to say, "Why did you expect an OS made eight years after the hardware to run decently?" and I am going to say "I did not, I was just curious, also note that I did not have a window manager installed and it was still bleh and half the thing's hardware was not actually supported :P"
