New Mac Mini

Apple (Canada) - Mac mini - Introducing the new Mac mini. Redesigned in a very big way.

Awesome lil thing

That is ridiculously expensive for its specs.

But this is excessively expensive even for a Mac.

Honestly, I'm not sure why they didn't price it higher. I think it's fairly well established that price point isn't a consideration for the average purchaser of Apple products.

It did see a price bump for sure. Still a pretty neat little unit though. I'm sure many people would be pleased with their purchase. I wouldn't spend money on that though when I know I can build a PC for a much better price.

They use Quake 4 and Doom 3 to demonstrate the 'power' of the mini. If that doesn't scream 'marketing for the gullible'...

For $750 you can build an HTPC that would absolutely smoke that. For $500-$600 I might consider buying a mini as an HTPC just to have a mac in the house for photo work, etc. But that price is ridiculous.

I thought the Mini was supposed to be

1. Small, powerful, efficient
2. Cost effective

Well it just lost point #2. And didn't really improve on #1 by any great stretch.

Curious to see how well this goes over with mini enthusiasts. It's not like they went to Core, it's still a C2D. You can get a C2D mini for a lot less than $750+. And if you want something to game on... then you are barking up the wrong tree altogether.

So why is this so awesome again? Maybe I am missing something here?

i won't even consider one of these until they start coming with i5's with 4gb of ddr3 as standard... which won't be anytime soon. they're going to flunk with this one that's for sure.

The main improvement is the size (it's roughly half the size (thickness) of the last one). Also the graphics were upgrading significantly to the 320M over the 9400M.

It's overpriced for the specs, but people who buy this kind of thing aren't really looking to hard at the specs (are most mac users ??). It's basically the white macbook without the screen.
