discussion AMD FX 6100 as gaming CPU; review request

Hello, Linus. Will you make review of AMD FX 6100 CPU? Thanks for your 8150 videos, but it is a very expensive processor and I don't think everyone needs 8 cores nowadays.
So I (and all of us, I hope) want to see how 6100 in games: is it good for gaming machine; can it replace Phenom x4; can it be recommended for modern gaming rig; etc. Phenom is outdated now (it's 3yo CPU and previous generation), 8 core FX, how I wrote, is pretty expensive and isn't necessary for people who don't encode videos a lot and don't work with archives.

As seen before, Phenom II 1100T outperforms the 8150, logic tells me that the 6100 will perform even worse...

AMD has apparently made a conscious decision not to supply reviewers with the lower end chips. That should be all you need to know about the expected performance of them.

I second that Fumiko! I want to see a two gaming machine contest, though hold to a price... as building gaming rig where the "money’s no object" isn’t reality.

Let's say a <$700 budget for CPU, mobo, ram, CPU cooler and graphic card(s) on those 5 componets. But to make this more fun hold to decent, but not super-pricey PSU like a PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk II 750W High Performance that a nice $80-90 PSU right now on Egg. While just a regular HDD, because some SSD will help this title, or that will play better on this game that takes the endeavor in a whole new dimension.

Now there are other matrix's to this; those 5 sub-systems OC'n is absolutely encouraged, also factor longevity, and a decent upgrade path so you’re not "binning" the whole mess before the end of 2012.

The FX-6100, with the ASRock 970 EXTREME4 that provides feature like PCIe (x8/x8, x4), SATA 6Gb/s, and good OC’n without breaking the bank. For the cooler maybe the Xigmatek Aegir SD128264 with G.SKILL Sniper Series 8GB (DDR3 1866). Top it off with two Sapphire 100315L 6850 for $125 each –AR. So right now at Egg that’s all just $673.

The gauntlet Dx9-11 B-M’s at 1920x and 2650x. I’d like to see BF3 as that’s appears strenuous on CPU and GPU, and would $673 worth of components give acceptable 2650x? May be a Tri-Montor, to make it interesting?

Figure I’d find 4.3-4.5Ghz with the Xigmatek, and still trust that 750W High Performance (62A 12V+) can sustain both the CPU and Cross-Fire GPU(s) OC’d.

What parts would you like to face off with?

I'd like to see an overclocking (only?) review for the FX-6100 just to know if it can overclock higher or have less crazy power consumption when doing so.
Yes, a Core i5 2400 at stock will still outperform an 24/7 OC'd FX-6100 in most cases, but maybe the FX-6100 OC can find a place the same way the older Celerons did?

You're the first to pick that CPU... interesting, and not OC'd. Ok it is really less to do about the CPU anyway but for the price… it's your choice.

When build a gaming machine do you really plan to leave it on 24/7? I suppose today it doesn't matter with Win7 Sleep mode. As for power consumption it's all about gaming, as long as it can maintain with the PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk II 750W High Performance, it’s all good. The difference in power used when actually running load up and gaming is negligible in the total scheme. I mean, that’s your worry after dropping $700-1,000; monitor and all on a gaming rig? I'd suggest getting an Xbox or Ps3... As such trepidation isn't factored here.

Well, just say I'm not completely persuaded and still beating the bushes for good info on FX-6100... here’s a review from a German site so you'd need translate... or maybe not.

This review is notably detailed and if on the "up and up" it's very comprehensive. After a lot of time running through it, I may perhaps give in... it’s not as I gleaned from the few other FX-6100 reviews, while seems to collaborate what Guru3d reported. Anymore I'm taking away... as with the 8-core they’re just as funky and sporadic in performance and if anything a substitute to a 1055T.

There's one thing with this review that appears different... the power; which what they had for loaded power was a good bit less than 1100T, though trails it by 10-12% performance most often. It's close and would still like to see OC FX-6100 vs. OC 1100T. I still want to think a FX-6100 a better OC and a little less power hungry verses the 1100T, but given the 10-12% lead even if at 4.5Ghz the FX-6100 as ground to make up.

It will be a different situation once the FX-6100 dips below $150. Kind of the same thing we saw with the 5850/6850. Sure it was less of a card, but to say what’s 5% less performance, today you get it at $130 which a little less than 3 years ago was a $280 part. The 1100T at launch was $265 what 12 months ago, now if you say in several weeks that for 10-12% reduction in performance it’s now $150, it will be suitable for the spot.

I like everyone take backward momentum as really abnormal, I might say wait for the next swing of the pendulum, because at least AMD is in the game. No game no clear winners!

it's not exactly a review, but gOtVoltage over at XtremeSystems got his hands on a FX-6100 and he seems to like what he sees, so far...

FX 6100 Oh torture me ,yes its wierd and spooky and clocks up ta 5000mhz no prob.

I'm also curious about these new chips... I'd really like to see more about the FX-4100, but I might just have to buy one and see for myself :biggrin:
