What To Do

I have an iPod Touch. When I turned it on today I find that most of the installed apps (2 or 3 paid but most freebies) are simply an icon. When I go to open an app it never progresses beyond the home screen. The only exceptions are the Apple included apps (camera, etc). Sync'ing does nothing.
1. What happened?
2. I guess this means re-installing everything?
3. Should I update to iOS 5.0.1 first?

I would reset to defaults, update to 5.01, then reinstall your apps

Just do a restore w/ iTunes. Should fix any software problems.

I have managed to get "All purchases downloaded to this (my) computer" displayed on the iTunes screen.
My computer display shows everything (Free "purchases" & paid-for apps).

When I attach my iPod I get a "Sync" message but checking the iPod after syncing has finished
shows no change - nothing was transferred.

How do I return the apps onto my iPod?
