Default Basics of HTPC

I've been reading up on all of the threads in here, but i'm still kind of unclear.

I want to build a htpc that will record tv and play movies on. We have a 50" plasma tv. What exactly are the componenets that i will need? a tuner card and a sound card?
(whitty saying to be plagiarized at a later date)

dont even need a soundcard, as long as your PC has decent onboard audio. Tuner cards are good to have. Check out the HVR-1800 or HVR-1600 from Hauppauge. Great cards.
