Default VLC / Remote Desktop software for control?

Somewhat related to the recent topic on remotes but far enough away that I didn't want to thread crap.

What are folks using on their tablets to access their HTPCs? Unified remote worked great, but since my media server is remote to my home theatre amp / TV I need something that actually gives me access to the desktop through the network so that I can see the media player in order to select files....

So far I've tried Teamviewer but found it a bit slow to respond as well as (might just be a setting) affecting the resolution (I did like the touch screen controls though). I've also managed to get RealVNC installed and accessed it via a couple of apps (AndroidVNC and bVNC free). I had a quick look at windows remote desktop but don't want to have to go through the hassles of domain names and users.

Basically what I'm doing is using media player's "send to device" function to get through the DLNC client on my Onkyo amp. This gives me a better interface than the pokey one on the amp as well as the ability to set up playlists on the fly (rather than just playing the ones already set up on the PC).

Anything I should be looking at? How about a different media player that has a "Send to Device" function? I'm only doing audio files so something like XMBC would be wayyyyyy too much overhead and I'm not even sure if it would do the trick.

If you are just looking for audio control/playback apparently something like https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...d.playaControl might work provided you are running android on your tablet.

The critical component that's missing from that app is the ability to tell my PC downstairs to "send to device" unless winamp has that ability and it can be accessed from the app. I'll have a look at winamp though, I also believe mediamonkey is a popular player that might work for me.
