No need of Win8 TBH, I scrapped my KB/Mouse connections to all my HTPC's, mind you 2 have remotes but I use a RDC or a simple media remote via the tablets. I have to say I have not looked back.

Does your HTPC include a tuner or is it just (as is the case with most folks) downloaded/ripped content? Drivers for the tuner would be my main concern.

Yup all three have analog tuners, all under Win7. They handle the analog content and my PVR handles the HD. Only one is setup to stream TV to my tablet though.
But the tablets handle the remote functions as well as RDC when needed.

Ok, so win7 vice win8 (I thought you were suggesting doing away with windows all together). I was thinking win8 just because it is a better touch interface so thought a tablet would more easily navigate the win8 start screen.

Heh I wondered what you were getting at.

Yes Win7.

While slightly different I am assuming that John will be using this for a mediacenter, music/movies/radio so not much different than a HTPC as stated.
And for this Win8 touch screen isnt a huge issue, 90% of the time your going to be working from a mediacenter, I find WMC with mediabrowser works just fine for anything I throw it's way, for working from within WMC I use either a remote. Or one of my tablets running a WMC remote app.
Now while in desktop mode persay, I use a RDC app to connect to the HTPC's and that has touch gestures built in.

So all I was saying is that Win8 isnt "needed" for the touch support, it works seamlessly under Win7 using the correct apps.

Those were my taughts too: Win8 on the trailer-puter, add a router to create a network, and use the tablet with TeamViewer to log into the Win8 HTPC. This simplifies the whole deal too, since I don't need BT nor wireless to be inbedded in the motherboard - any mitx board with a single PCI-E 1x slot would do.

Kev, thanks for your thoughts and knowledge regarding this, it seals the deal quite well. Time to search into a board repalcement for the Zotac model, and order everything. This is going to be great!

Alpine Electronics of America, Inc.
I did find one (https://www.springwateraudio.com/sto...products_id=51), but I didn't know Alpine made such small amps. Good to know if the selected model isn't up to par.

Ram: whatever I have on hand, which is way too much.

Did you sign up for the free win8 media center key? If not, I believe the promo is still open until the new year.

Quick update: parts have been received and assembled; Windows 8 installed and updated with MCE - thanks Steve! (damn, UEFI install + Intel SSD = 8 seconds to desktop!). Using Splashtop (Best Remote Desktop App | Access Computer from iPad | Splashtop), I can connect wirelessly to the computer with my Acer tablet and the router I bought (using WAN only, with a dedicated/protected SSID). But Damn! I think the Hauppage Tv Tuner is busted since Windows does not recognize it - I mean, it won't even launch the New hardware window upon installation, nor does Device Manager sees it.

It's that or a blown PCI-E slot. I'll test some more tomorrow with a USB PCI-E card. Otherwise, everything works as expected.
