Default Codec question

Sorry I don't have much time to spend on this right now so I just wanna throw it out there. Which would some of you collectively agree is the better codec pack to use right now. I'm a little out of the loop on this and really just wanna install the best one the 1st time.

Normally I just use VLC media player which plays nearly everything but I don't always use it. I have movies in many different formats so it would be nice to cover the bases.

Cheers fellas.

XBMC will cover most of your bases and is a all in one. I used to use VLC but it really started to annoy me.

Current ffdshow or just use an app that supports everything (xbmc, mpc-hc).

I use xbmc for my media pc and vlc on my personal. Haven't run into a video format or audio codec it couldn't play back.
