SO i haven't built one of these recently. So here is what i am planning. I already have some of the gear listed from old builds.
Mobo/CPU/GPU: Asus E35M1-M Pro (need to purchase)
Ram: Corsair XMS3 TW3X4G1333C9 (need to purchase)
Boot Drive: 40GB Intel SSD
Case: Silverstone Milo ML03B
Power Supply: Antec Earthwatts 380W (need to purchase)
Keyboard/Mouse: Visontek Candyboard (Mouse, Keyboard, Controller) (need to purchase)
LCD Module: Crystal Fontz 4x20 LCD Module
OS: Windows 7 X64
Front End: XBMC
ODD: External USB DVD-RW for setup only
Primary uses will be for watching streamed content (either from the home network or internet). Will connected to a HD Projection system for 1080P
My only worries with that case would be the fact the mobo/cpu/gpu has no fan to cool off the heatsink, and it looks like the case has no fans to pull air in along it as well, which could lead to it overheating (as those passive heatsinks still need some kind of case air flow to help keep them cool).
Beyond that, looks great, personally I wish i knew about that little combo instead of going the 100$ more expensive route to go with low end SB and a dedicated GPU.
well it seems to be the combination people are using these days. Besides i believe the board has some expansion slots so i could always put in a better gpu and sound card,
I believe we may have some wires crossed. I was saying I wish i knew about this, as it would have saved me 100$ and gave me the same 1080p hd playback I have now. My only concern is your case and combo as neither have a fan to allow that passive heatsink to get cooled off at all.
ahh. As for the dissipation. i was thinking a low profile fan might fit on top. I am also planning on replacing the included 80mm with some 80mm noctua's i have lying around to keep noise to a minimum. The reason i went with that is case is that i have a 4x20 lcd module that fits in a 5.25 bay and could not find a case with an external 5.25 bay that didn't have a cover for drive stealthing.
I'd take this case over the Antec..
NCIX.com - Buy Silverstone Milo ML03B Black mATX HTPC Case 1X5.25 2X3.5INT USB3 Supports 4 80MM Case Fan - Silverstone Technology - ML03B - in Canada
And I have one and really like it.
that is a nice little case. I may have to consider that. instead and just throw in an earthwatts.
That does look like a nicer case and i can vouch for silverstone's build quality in their HTPC cases.
I'm not sure if you're aware but you'd only be able to put a fan ontop of that, that heatsink used is actually covering 2 chips, not just one, meaning you can't go out and buy an after market heatsink for it.
i actually took a closer look at the motherboard and it looks like the pro version comes with a 60mm fan. :)
I've never been a big fan of 60mm fans, i find they barely move the air at all since they are more designed to be quiet then anything (IE look at my sega genesis build log http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...nesis-mod.html ). If you have quiet 80mm fans and that they'll fit in that case, you could have them push air into the case, as all those heat sinks really need is some kind of air flow against them (doesn't have to be direct).
