El Cheapo HTPC

I've got a small HTPC project in mind... to play movies, stream videos and play snes/playstation emulation on a 42'' tv.

I've got some spare pieces, 2gb of generic ddr2 RAM, a geforce 8600GT, dvd drives, HDDs.

I just need mATX case and motherboard, PSU and processor. My goal is to make it cheap and silent.

Here's what i planned :
Some normal case with a generic PSU : http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=24586
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200
Gigabyte mATX case http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=44632

If i get a shipping deal, this should cost me about 180$.

Any comments?

780G and under does not have 10.1

For board I suggest a 785G for its 10.1 DX support.

10.1 is able to accelerate those adobe flash videos from streaming sites.

That 8600GT only has DX10, hell even my gtx 260 doesn't have 10.1, and when playing those youtube videos its all load on CPU, If one doesn't have a powerful CPU you wouldn't be able to play multiple 1080p at youtube due to the lack of 10.1 on gpu. with 3 1080p youtube files playing I can see cpu hitting 80% on a quad @3.4ghz :shok::angry2:

And freaking nvidia told the public 10.1 was just marketing crap from ATI, I was a dumb ass to listen to them :blarg::angry2::doh:

If you decide you want to go with the 760G you can buy an add on like Asus 4350 for $25 for some flash video DXVA.

I'd suggest going intel, they just feel snappier in general. I've got an e6400 right now and I've used stuff from e5300's to q6600's, all of them just feel snappier than my phenom 550 x4. Maybe it's gotta do with the chipset or something... even the menu for windows install pops up faster.

There's a deal for a e5400 with VT and a matx mobo at CC for 115 or something right now, looks nice

Bah!! You had me going there for a minute. An Asus mobo and Intel gfx to boot. No thanks. A nice surfer/MS office rig though, no doubt.

I would really only go intel IGP if its the only thing out there :haha:

Update... comes out now the Athlon i wanted is discontinuted. Anyways, i switch to intel. It would make my htpc more future proof with lga775, which will allow me to bring my e8500 on it when i decide to upgrade my main rig.

Now going with this ASUS board NCIX.com - Buy ASUS P5G41C-M LGA775 DDR2 DDR3 G41 mATX PCI-E16 PCI-E1 2PCI HDMI VGA SATA2 GBLAN Motherboard - P5G41C-M In Canada.
with an Intel e5300.

Also added this cheap wireless keyboard and mice combo NCIX.com - Buy Logitech MK300 Wireless Combo Keyboard & Mouse Optical USB - 920-000920 In Canada.

Will get more fancy stuff when money starts coming in.

Gives a grand total of 250$

Not bad, ordered
Sweet
