well maybe that's the problem. I am a good student and I was told to only use flac as it was the best quality out there.

It works!! but only so-so. I'm noticing the video is a little glitchy but not too bad, but the audio is gets really choppy at times. I don't have the slightest as to where to even start to track down the issues. I do notice that the HDD light is lit up almost constantly and CPU usage is usually from 50% to 80% during play back. Maybe I'm hardware limited?

What are you using for playback? It does take a rather powerful CPU for playback. Playback on my Q8200 @ 3.2GHz averages about 15-20% CPU usage while playing a movie.
You can try MPC-HC w/ this guide for DXVA. Watching h.264 videos using DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA). | My collection of short anime reviews

I don't know if it will work movies encoded w/ VC-1 though. AFAIK it will only help w/ MPEG-4 (h.264).

I tried WMP and I think a couple others. My htpc has a e3110 (e8400 equiv.) at the stock 3.0GHz 2bg Ram and a ATI 4670HD.

I'm still up in the air about frontends but I'm slowly going over to XBMC. I really like VMC's polished look... my wife (or friends) can just pick up the remote and use it which is a huge plus but XBMC seems much more customizable but looks like it's going to take a lot of work on my end to make it as slick as VMC, though at the same time make it better than VMC. At least it has tools to work with.

Anyway I'd like to hear how to get classic media player into XBMC. I tried googling and kept coming across XML (IIRC) code and that's beyond me at this point. Even if I could cut & paste I wouldn't know what to do with it.

Edit: BTW I think the movie I used was VC-1

Ya XBMC does take a lot of work to look/play nice. I can't remember how to get an external player (MPC) to work w/ XBMC at the moment. As my TV was stolen a while back I haven't used my HTPC in a while. Once I get up and running again, I'll let you know how to setup MPC w/ it.

Tried a second movie and having some issues. Using mkvmerge I get this error while pre-parsing the flac "Error: flac_reader: Error parsing the file: 3". Seen it before? Any ideas?

No I haven't. Have you tried a different movie to see if it happens again?

FWIW I tried using WAV and had no problems... no idea why that is. Also playback seems to be fine now. Might have something to do with BOINC I think so I've adjusted those settings. BTW Any harm in using WAV over flac for audio besides a few wasted MB's? AFAIK there is no difference SQ wise. I use flac for all my audio files (as in music) because I can attach ID tags for track info but I can't see that being a necessity here.

WAV's are going to considerably larger in size and AFAIK nothing will play it w/ 24-bit depth. AFAIK using Flac w/ madFlac is the only way this is possible.

Tried a couple other movies and mkvmerge still failing diring the 'parsing the flac' bit. The flac works, I can play it in WMP no problem. Tried uninstalling/reinstalling mkvmerge as well as different versions and no joy. Anything else that can merge the audio and video?
