My vote would go for the WDTV. Hack it and you can stream from your PC AFAIK. No way you can beat its price point either.

Every "hack" i can see for the WDTV just turns it into a NAS that can Stream OUT (as in, be used by a streaming device or by a PC to display videos from its storage) not the other way around... bleh.

Missed that one, nice catch. However, if this were for me i would have no problems trying this out and flashing the custom firmware. However, it isnt, lol. The guy this is going isn't very knowledgable with such things and if i showed him how to set things up with a modified linux os on a WDTV he'll probably go cross-eyed. So for that reason i dont think the WDTV is the best option.

Does anyone have an alternate suggestions?
Newegg.ca also has a "barebone" with the same motherboard as mentioned in my prevous post. The problem is, that would require me giving my friend (or selling for far too cheap) the CPU, ram, hard drive and optical drive necessary to complete the barebone... which already costs $250!

You could always go with an ITX atom/ion board. Although I doubt it will be cheaper than a Popcorn Hour.

Popcorn hour (lowest model): $250
NCIX.com - Buy Popcorn Hour B-110 Mini Itx Home Theater Motherboard LAN HDMI 1.3 SATA Optical USB Mini PCI Mkv - POPCORN HOUR B-110 In Canada.

VS

Jetway 780G ITX Barebone: $250
Newegg.ca - Jetway HBJC125C81-B AMD Socket AM2+ AMD 780G 1 x 200Pin ATI Radeon HD3200 Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System - Mini / Booksize Barebone Systems

Which would you choose?

I'd probably lean towards the ITX system, rather than the popcorn hour, because i don't need to spend anything extra (other than using parts i already have) to get it working. The popcorn is just a mobo... nothing else.

That being said, is there truly NO $150 or less Media streamer that's worth anything? Sheesh....

I'd take the popcorn hour. The 780G has a crippled HDMI. I am pretty sure it cannot output LPCM over HDMI.

Popcorn hour is a full unit. You don't need to buy anything else for it. As long as you can run a cat5 cable to it, the A-100 is all you'll need.

What do you mean a full unit? It comes with case/psu/etc etc ? How come none of that is described on the ncix page, lol.
