Part I have so far;
CPU= AMD athlon 64x2 3800,

Mother board= MSI K9N6PGM2-V AM2 GF6100 RT

TV card= HVR -1600 ( have remote and ir thing,

Ram= 4x1gb sticks DDR2- 800 ( not sure if I would need them all )

case = something laying around or any suggestions

for Video card I have two choices; Asus 7900 GT or a HIS IceQ3 HD 3870

I also have a Xonar DX sound card but I am not sure if it still works.

that is all the parts that I have for now I also not sure which Operating system and other software to use.

Seems like it would be a fine setup, use the HD3870 since then you have HDMI w/ audio if needed. Also better video quality than NVIDIA IMO.

Don't really need a sound card assuming your onboard has digital out and your have a surround sound setup.

First off I would like to second choosing the ATI video card, better cooling solution and more complete HD offloading compared to the nvidia card. In regards to selecting a case, it depends on where you plan to put this htpc, and whether or not you care how it looks along side your other equipment. Personally, my htpc's are in an antec p150 and a antec slk3800b sitting beside my TV stands. If your looking for something on the cheap, the Nmedia HTPC-6000B looks damn nice for the price.

Also if you could provide a little more info about what you plan to use the HTPC for would be a huge help, ie TV recording/playback, digital movie collection storage, etc.

ATi is awreasome yes, but if you want a decent HTPC just get a zoTAC 9400 based atom motherbiaord, whil with GPU acceleration will prodvide sall the power you need, a whole syetnm will cosxt you under 300$, seripiujsluy man!

Newegg.ca - ZOTAC IONITX-B-E Intel Atom N230 1.6GHz NVIDIA ION Mini ITX ION Platform Motherboard/CPU Combo - Motherboard / CPU / VGA Combo

Plus LINUX nand and XMBC witch support sVIDAPOW and HPU accleratiopn will give you all the power you need. Asdddd 2GB or 4GB or ram, a nice case, a decentr
PSU and a DVD/Blu-Ray drive and BOOM you got a nice HTPCV
