Hey, I don't really know if this will help, but a co-worker of mine has an HP laptop with hdmi and is having the same problem, apparently it is a driver issue with the video card, in his case I think it is an 8600m? but he got it to work by up-dating the driver to a newer version... just something to try?

I'm guessing you need to change the default audio device to HDMI.

Agreed, likely a setting in the BIOS.

I was thinking more within Windows. Doubt an HP BIOS would have such an option.

My laptop with an 8600m in it has HDMI sound and it works fine. Use windows to select the HDMI interface as the default audio interface. Vista does this automagically for me.

I have tried to get this to work before. Granted it was on an ati based card. The most i could ever get to work was 2 channel sound. 5.1 never worked properly. If it were me and your computer has either digital coax or toslink fiberoptic just use that and save the headache.

I had a problem similar to this on my PC with a 9800GTX+, I had to set the sound output to SPDIF and it worked fine after that, that was with the realtek sound and I believe I just set it up in realteks software.
