I don't see why not...

My AMD Athlon X2 4400+ (Socket 939) with a 7900GTO (no HD decoding on that) can play them fine. Might want to use CoreAVC for lower CPU usage, but ffdshow works fine too.

They play fine, i have the same motherboard and a AMD 5000+ Black 2.6Ghz. No dropped frames that I noticed.

looks

My E2180 at stock 2.0ghz plays 1080p MKV files at 20%-50% max , GPU usage 1%-6%

Media player classic- homecinema used with coreavc codec. (the coreAVC saves about 2%-5% cpu usage )

With MPC-HC you can make your supporting 2xxx 3xxx 4xxx series to off load cpu usage , of course the files got to be h264, i follow this guide and made drop the cpu usage to 10%-30% and upped gpu usage to 14% but when you want to skip it has some delays like a second or two.

for HTPC's its good to get power saving components

I have that exact motherboard with a slower processor and it can play 1080p perfectly. I don't know the CPU usage exactly, but it is fairly low as the GPU does most of the work.

In the same vein, would a LGA775 P4 3.0ghz with 2 gig and a 7600GT be able to pull it off? I would only need a new mobo to stuff that into a micro ATX case. I got the rest somehwere in my parts bins.

PC Cyber Canada - For All Your Computer Needs for mobo maybe.

Strictly to play 720p/1080i in stereo(MKV and such), mainly TV shows.

My amd 3800+ Asus m2n-hdmi HTPC barely plays 1080p. Had audio sync issues until I told zoomplayer to drop late frames. Does 720p just fine though.

just dealing with core2 my rule of thumb is 720p needs min 1.6 ghz 1080p needs 2.4 thats not using an off loading codec like power dvd or coreavc all other ones i have tried do not off load
