True. CPUs and GPUs do different types of science too, so depending on the type of work that Stanford needs done, the points system gets tweaked again.

It's actually because CPUs and GPUs will now be able to do the same science thanks to the new Gromacs core that QRB is being introduced to GPUs. This way, PG can pursue an ideal of "equal pay for equal work." A noble pursuit in theory, but a perilous one in reality. I explain:

The problem with the equal pay/equal work ideal is that it is precisely that - an ideal. Everybody knows the wide variation in productivity of the same hardware depending on the WU - so the very concept of equal pay/equal work is completely broken in the fah context. For example, when Quicksilver is working on P8102, it produces a 45% higher PPD than when it is working on P8101. So much for equal. Many similar examples on the GPU side of things, lest we forget those 511s. Since both intra-CPU and intra-GPU equality is broken, pursuing equality across platforms will also, necessarily, be broken.

As such, it is an unattainable ideal. The reason this is of some concern is this: Break the points system enough, and eventually it won't work any more.

I'm assuming this will also affect the output of Quadro cards? A Quadro 4000 fell into my lap the other day so I'm wondering what the PPD will be for that.

Try it out, attach the beta flag, and let us know.

Edit: Based on the number of CUDA cores (256) and the clock spd (475Mhz) it should perform similarly to a GTX460SE (288 cores, 650MHZ), which I believe is the core it's based on.

I finally started getting some of these WU's and climbed into the top 10 in team PPD on the day I had to shut it down and pack it up for the move. Sigh.

I was #7 in daily PPD, but Braineater bumped me down to #7 just today. Thanks a lot!

My rigs shut down this morning for about 5 hours :( Otherwise I'd probably have stolen second from Zink already, but by the looks of it stoanee is going to fly by me in no time! :)

I remember seeing you creep up on me points wise, Blue. I think at one point, you would have passed me in 1.2 weeks. Then I got my new card, and it looks like I'll be able to hold you off for another few monthes. Whew.

My points are highly inflated from luck getting 8057s. It will settle once they either go away or become the norm :)
