I'm setting up an ASUS KFN5-D Sli board with 2x 2212 Opterons.I want to put 2 video cards in......yes , it's for folding.



SMP client ?

Can I get better cpu's for cheep ?

Thanks for any input....I got this rig for free , it'd be cool if it'll produce.

The KFN5-D supports Barcelonas, so yeah, you can move to eight cores for pretty cheap. While the 2360SE's would be at the absolute end of the upgrade path, these are just one step down from top of the line for just a few bucks: AMD OPTERON QUAD CORE CPU 2358 SE 2.40GHZ 2MB L3 CACHE OS2358YAL4BGH | eBay

Overclocking is also possible on that board. Fun toy!

Confused why they are so cheap? Worth buying them even if its for a paper weight?

I don't really know the answer to that with 100% certainty, but I believe it's a function of good ol' fashioned supply n' demand.

By now, pretty much all Barcelona-based datacentres have upgraded to Shanghai, Istanbul or moved on to G34. As a result, Barcelonas first flooded then saturated the market to the point where there basically were no potential buyers left at any volume level, reducing their resale value significantly.

Both....I think..Just playing around at the moment.

For 5 $ I think I'll hunt down better procs first.

Don't forget to make sure the BIOS is flashed to 0404 before popping in the Barcelonas.

At this point I'm more interested in the fact it's got 2 pci-e slots.....Got some gpu's to get running.

(That's after I fix the cpu 1 HSF clip.)

2 quad core opterons at 2.4 GHz each would be a little weaker than my dual hexacores @1.8 . Here is a quick screenshot of what kind of production you can expect. The new 806x units seem to produce a lot of points. Now it depends how efficient you want to make it, you could use some GTX 295, I got one a few days ago and is doing around 15k PPD on stock clocks. The board does not seem to support hexacores Optys.
