I've downloaded the SMP client (and .net) and I'm running it now. It says "working on unit 1" but for some reason, the CPU load is down around 0 to 1%, so there isn't much going on despite what the SMP window says- why wouldn't it be running?

a lan disconnect after the client has started will cause this.

check in task manager, processes tab (click on image name column to sort) ...
i am guessing when you are in this state, only mpiexec.exe is running and you don't have 4 x FahCore_a1.exe tasks running. If you have more than 1 but less than 4 FahCore's running, then there may be a different problem.

In the first case, close the client window with ctrl-c, and then kill the mpiexec.exe task in task manager.
Then before restarting the client, disable your lan ... and then restart the client. This should keep the client running at 100% regardless of you lan connection state at least for that wu.

Once the wu finishes, you will need the lan enabled to upload the results, and get the next wu.

You may need to repeat this workaround once you get the next wu.

Since mpiexec.exe is the task which starts and normally stops the 4 core processes (only with the win smp client), killing it in task manager will also kill all the 1-4 running core task.

At the end of a wu, it can take the client 4-5 minutes to finish the wu and close all the core tasks. Uploading the results can take quite a while ... several minutes on my adsl sympatico link ( i think it is only 256 kb for upload)

I am not sure how your laptop is configured, but closing the lid may also cause the smp client to suspend and not resume? If this happens, I am guessing recovery might be similar. If you can't resolve it through laptop config, then it might just be better to stop the client before closing the lid.

Also, I don't have 100% faith yet in the beta client yet when it comes to starting and stopping it.

What i sometimes do when i am about to try stopping it is to copy the work directory and queue.dat file to a backup directory BEFORE i stop client. The work directory and queue.dat file contains the current and any queued-for-transmit wu's. Then if the wu gets corrupted during shutdown of the client, you can just delete the wu and copy the backup back in.

Let us know how it goes :)

They do ... but if you had run a single core wu before that could take >day or 2 and only produce a wu worth 2-500 pts, then you will have something to compare to .. the win smp wu's are worth 1150-1760 points depending on the wu.
