Sorry it was late and it seems I left out some words. Wandering around I found the alternate clients page GPU's and SMP?? with some iffy documentation. I'm trying to do something more useful then the standard clients 20% cpu usage and hours spent to complete one work unit.

What's the best client for someone with my systems specs? I figure a gpu client and some multiple of the cpu clients. Unfortunately around the time of that post I broke the gpu client (pause for 24 hours or something) and got IO errors trying to run multiple cpu clients.

What's this rossetta@home? what's this bionic thing? Throw some more direct links into client dl pages for gpu/beta/smp into the faq?

Suggested setting for someone willing/wanting to do more then run the default client, which is horribly slow, included in the faq? I realize that sort of topic is somewhat more dynamic then a thread post really allows for.

With a rig like yours, I would crunch with BOINC using your Quad, and setup Boinc to use 3 Cores (75% of the CPU). Then I would use the beta GPU Client from FAH and hope for some good numbers.

3 issues with your card: it's an Ati, it's a 4850 and it's passively cooled. The Ati cards don't output as many ppd (points per day) as their nVidia counterparts, the 4850 is not the most powerful and running the GPU Client generates a huge amount of heat. Running passive cooling could be an issue.

D/L links:

Boinc: BOINC: compute for science. We crunch for Rosetta@home.
Fah GPU: Folding@home - DownloadWinOther. Windows XP/2003 GPU Console client (Client #3) if you run XP, Windows Vista GPU Console client (Client #4) if you use Vista. You will have to create a username, making sure it does not exist (Folding@home - Download the Folding@home software application, 2/3s down the page), and our Team is 54196. Follow this guide here for the setup: How to install SMP client on Windows Vista - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net. Start with 7).

Welcome to both teams.

John

Thank for the information, 3.0charlie. I'll also add my goal isn't to be the best folder but instead to contribute the best I can. I'll pay close attention to the gpu temps and have a good idea when I've done too much. I don't have any fans directly attached to the gpu hs but I do have six in the case.

Every RAC increase (Boinc) and every completed WU (Fah) helps. Doesn't matter how much.

If you have other issues, you'd better start a new thread. Easier to help that way.

Is anybody else having problems getting Nvidia GPU WUs? I'm succesfully connecting to the assignment server, but the work server is taking quite a while handing out WUs.

Yup, same here. Maybe they can't keep up with the demand?

BTW, congratz on your 2 000 000th point!

Apparently we're being hit with both a planned outage, and an unplanned one so expect some servers to be backed up....

Had to reset my clients, otherwise no work would be uploaded.
