Default Back to folding

Well, I have a spare PS3 and Im back on the team. I assume nothing has changed here :

Team #54196

Mark

What is the cost of running the PS3 all day anyway ? I know it consumes about 115 watts ?

Cost = rate * kilowatt hours used

Welcome back. The new V7 Folding Client is probably the biggest change for PC users. For the PS3, I'm unsure how the landscape might have changed.

CC team race is coming up May 5th (if all goes well).

Latest Ontario Rate :

Demand
Periods RPP Time-of-Use Price Winter Season
November 1, 2011 to April 30, 2012
On-Peak 10.8 cents/kWh Weekdays:
7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Mid-Peak 9.2 cents/kWh Weekdays:
11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Off-Peak 6.2 cents/kWh Weekdays:
7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Weekends & Holidays:
All Day

so lets take an average of say 8.5 cents x .115 = .97/per day x 7 = $6.79/week

Damn

Think I'll fold during off peek hours between off peak ours from 7pm to 7am.

Are my calculations about right ... give or take ?

I get quite different numbers.

Let's start with the average cost of electricity.
I took a weighted average 6h peak, 6h mid-peak, 12h off-peak and got an average cost of 8.1 cents/kWh.
Taking into account the weekends, this gives 7.557 cents/kWh.

The PS3 uses 0.115kW, so 115W*24h/day*7day/week=19.32 kW/week.

Multiplying the energy use by the cost/week gives $1.46/week.
Not that bad if you ask me.

I'm getting something totally different ...

0.115kWh x 24hrs x 7days = 19.32kWh per week
Average price per kWh = (10.8 + 9.2 + 6.2)/3 = 8.7333 cents per kWh (I know that my value is higher than the actual average since more weight is towards off peak, but this is worst case)

Weekly cost to fold = 19.32kWh x $0.087333 = $1.68 per week.

I believe that you only calculated for 7 hours of folding - $0.085 x 0.115Watts = $0.0097 per hour x 7 = $0.0679, not $6.79.

Edit: Damn, ninja'd

Yup, that makes sense.

Since we are folding for the team, we should at least get beaver bobble heads each !. I've seen them for $5.50 each

Thanks.

Question, the CC team race is coming up May 5th...how long does it last ? If it's reasonable ( not sure on the details at all or what the race is ) I'll have my PC and another PS3 folding that day as well.

It's usually 10 days to two weeks , really depends on what rules.
