My System Specs

Default The only thing that pisses me off...

About FAH is that (at least in the USA) any cures or treatments that come folders will most likely be bought and patented by a HUGE corporation, turned into a commercial product, then sold for a profit. And this is at our expense. We'll be expected to buy the treatment (maybe not in Canada) after having spent all this money on parts and electricity bills.

That idea really grinds my gears. But don't get me wrong. Having the option of being able to buy a cure for cancer is better than not having that option. It's just that I believe that human health is not an area where profit should be made.

Welcome to the patent system and a world where you're only successful if you have money.

It's not that I'm anti-profit or anti-capitalism, it's just that some things should be hands off.

You really wouldn't like to live in the United States than. All the Blue Cross / Blue Shield system.. all they do is milk money from the population, getting rich off of the sick.
No money? they'll (un)kindly have security escort you to the curb..

The results from folding will not be sold:
Folding@home - FAQ-main
Quote:
Who "owns" the results? What will happen to them?

Unlike other distributed computing projects, Folding@home is run by an academic institution (specifically the Pande Group, at Stanford University's - Chemistry Department), which is a nonprofit institution dedicated to science research and education. We will not sell the data or make any money off of it.
Moreover, we will make the data available for others to use. In particular, the results from Folding@home will be made available on several levels. Most importantly, analysis of the simulations will be submitted to scientific journals for publication, and these journal articles will be posted on the web page after publication. Next, after publication of these scientific articles that analyze the data, the raw data of the folding runs will be available for everyone, including other researchers, here on this web site.
For-profits can use the results to create treatments I suppose, but nobody will be able to take the specific information derived on our machines and prevent other companies from using that data.

Well, that actually makes me feel a little better. Thanks.

I was probably just in a bad mood earlier this afternoon and needed to rant about something.

I hate it when i'm driving on the highway, and someone passes me - only to slow down. Drives me bananas.

Wait, yeah.. that's something.

Suppose I should head over to the OT area with the rant thread. heh.
