yeah is like you are at the airport and jets are taking off. My rig was folding at a given moment with a 9800GX2, a GTS250 and a 9800GTX+ (all these 3 cards were run off of a 650W PSU). it is fine as long as you keep your headphones on but when you take them off, that is another story. I sold all the cards and I am staying only on CPU folding it is much quieter and much more energy efficient. if you want cpu folding a good start is a rig with a core i7 2600k. Phenom II X6@4GHz and i5 2500k@4.5 GHz generate about 14k PPD, an i7 2600K@4.5 GHz is doing around 27k PPD so you have a good idea of what to expect.

I just sold of my two dual gtx 560 / i7 folding rigs and replaced them with two 4p MC rigs..

the heat is down, but the noise is up..

i get about 400k every two days with the bigadv units..

Hm, I never really thought about the noise but that would be a major factor for me. I don't want my apartment filled out with the sound of video cards, it would drive me and my GF crazy. I think that I would just save my pennies and go for a 2P rig in the future, it seems like it would be more cost efficient in the end with less noise as well.

I see a lot of people posting saying that they bought their 6128 and 6174 procs for $600 each but when I check on line at memoryexpress or ncix they are $1000 each. Are people getting these off ebay or something?

6128's are more like $150 each and 6174s can be had for $497, yes from ebay. Ask a few 2&4p owners for the seller they bought from.

maybe for you guys. but folding with my 560 TI twin frozr, the CPU cooler fans are louder than the GPU fans, and the sound from those are a little quieter than when my HDD spins up full rev.

Wow, that's much cheaper than I was expecting! With 6128's for $150, I could build a 4p system for an okay price.

The thing I don't miss from GPU folding is the heat

I used the raven cases (which vents the cards up vertically) and it was like an oven

true it wasn't as loud.. but it was HOT

I have some BNIB Interlagos for sale (cheeep) and I can throw in some memory (ECC 2gb x 16 sticks) :)

I think the multi processor systems will have to hold on for a little while as I am going to be getting a new graphics card for my main system first so it may be a while. Thanks for the info everyone!

So I picked up a gigabyte 7950 windforce OC and have put it to work folding :) Sadly my case is pretty small so I can't fit my old 4870 in at the moment. I am going to try to move some hard drives around and see if I can fit it in to get some extra folding power. *Fingers Crossed*

TBH you'd be better off just running smp on your i7 vs the amd cards. At minimum if you want to do gpu folding go nVidia you get major points from nVidia. Even if you're planning on running the cards along side smp on the cpu it still wouldn't be worth it in a ppd/watt point of view. Just my 2 cents.
