My System Specs

Default 2 Vid Cards - NO CROSSFIRE - For Folding

So I just ordered my 7970. Should be here in a few weeks. I can't wait until some code is released that allows it to fold. Here's hoping it's a beast.

Anyway, I'll still have my 5830 lying around doing nothing.

My question is, can I install both V-cards in THIS MOBO at the same time, and use the 5830 to fold fulltime?

Will it hamper the performance of my new GPU (will my new PCI slot go from x16 to x8, and will this make a difference)?

If worse comes to worse, I can reassemble my old AM2 system in order to run that 5830, but I'd rather have it all in one system if at all possible.

I don't see why not. You don't need Crossfire to fold on two AMD GPUs, but I'm not sure if it will work if you only have one monitor. This used to be a limitation back with the 4xxx series.

It's been awhile since I folded on AMD and I haven't done much with the V7 client. Ask around the folding@home sub-forum and see what they say.

Yes you can have both video cards running, while only folding on the 5830. No it will not hamper your 7970.

Do I detect a hint of reprimand in your tone?

Kidding, of course!

Yes, I'm a bit grumpy today, only 4 hours of sleep. I didn't see the need for 2 identical threads in separate forums.

If I remember correctly when i started folding, with a 5770, driver 10.5 was giving good results, around 6k PPD. Upgraded to 10.6 production dropped in half. So driver will make a big difference too. Win 7 was the OS used.

AMD's website is claiming
Quote:
Fold and mine faster than ever with AMD App Acceleration powered by the unprecedented 28nm GCN Architecture
. Yes, this is just marketing, but at the same time, reviews state that AMD has focused a lot of their develoment on GPU compute. So I have high hopes.

Does anybody know if they've released drivers that work with the folding client (if it was indeed a driver problem). Is there a folding benchmark anywhere on the web?
