That's what I would have thought a week ago. Now I believe that if they are testing the system out why not put the computers to good use. They will probably stop folding after a month once they check cooling and do a systems check. I think it's good for everyone. I still feel like a small potato. Which I am anyway. I thought this was folding at home. This blows f@h out of the water. With this much computing power I would think f@h would have some major results soon, I hope.

We currently do about 3 million a day.

HPCS could stand for The High Performance Computing Symposium (HPCS) is Canada’s foremost supercomputing conference

so is no more Folding at Home, is Folding at Work! these guys are cheating! In other order of ideas, how much production could you get with a quad LGA 2011 platform? A configuration that would be like 20K $? Let's say the type that would give you 40C/80T?

You're conflating two platforms. The upcoming 4P LGA 2011 Xeon parts (4600-series) will come in a max 8c/16t flavour. The existing 8P 8600-series is the one that features 10c/20t parts, and it's for LGA 1567. I'll let you know what PPD they do if and when my heatsinks ever arrive from either Dynatron or Supermicro. I have two sets on order to see which one gets here first - I've been waiting since the beginning of October after all, so I'm losing patience. BTW, I spent a lot less than $20k on it.

As for a conference of public-sector computing consortia running this - not likely. There's probably only one or two machines under their auspices that could potentially handle this kind of workload, and they're both heavily scheduled as it is. Besides, that conference was in June.
