i7 950 vs i7 990X
I am thinking of upgrading my CPU from the Intel QuadCore i7 950 3.07 GHx to the Intel 6 Core i7 990X 3.47 GHz CPU.
I am using all 8 cores in the Quad for folding, and need to find out if all 12 cores in the i7 990X will do [email protected] enough better than the quad to justify the cost difference?
I have found a new one for a decent price, so as soon as I get some worthy advice :haha:, I will make a decision and update you.
Thanx in advance for any help.
Hard question to answer without knowing a price point to be honest. In my opinion, I wouldnt bother upgrading X58 at this stage in the game unless that 6 core processor is a steal of a deal (<200ish? not exactly sure).
Being that 2600k's are overclocking to get PPD (near) to 6 core 9xx series chips, and with SNB-E soon and Ivy 6 months out I personally couldnt justify it.
it will make a killing but i wouldnt invest in 1366 right now..:)
Before the bigadv downgrade in points you use to get around 65k ppd w/ while at around 4.2GHz w/ a hexacore in Windows AFAIK. Not sure how it stands now though.
Unfortunately, my 1366 based system is rather new, so changing to another is out of the question.
There are certainly newer out there, but can't change this soon, got a wife to keep a little happy.
I am getting 65k to 70k with the quad and my other system now, so haven't taken a big hit on the scores yet.
If the points are greater, then I may have to go with the upgrade in the 1366 line.
I know there are some great CPUs coming out in the next 6 months, but Lee won't be there for a while.
Take care, and thanx for the input.........
6 Core Intel Xeon® X5675 3.07GHz Processor
Right or wrong, since I have a 1366 system, I opted to go for this:
PCs For Everyone : Product - Intel - BX80614X5675
I paid $600.00 USD for it, so think I got a great deal, time will tell on folding tho.
What motherboard are you using? That CPU has two QPI's and won't work in Gigabyte, EVGA, or many other manufacturers.
That price is fantastic though. Was it used or a one-time thing?
It is a new, one time CPU sale, darn it. :censored:
The description was not from the place I got it from, just an ad for all to see and read specs.
I was assured it would work perfectly in my Asus P6TD Deluxe mobo, with a newer BIOS installed.
Time will tell, as I won't get it until late next week.
Will keep all posted, if it works in the mobo or not, and how it folds.
It will work in Asus boards, so you shouldn't have anything to worry about. That is one hell of a CPU.
I think you're off the hook with that asus board.. lucky :P
awesome price too, to be honest.
EDIT: beaten to the punch.
