if your mobo has SLI can you function with 2 cards in different generations? not for the gaming part but for the folding?

You can't SLI two different generation or different version same generation cards. You can however fold them separately on the same computer, just not game sli.

People will sometimes use an older generation card as a physx card while using their main card for the heavy lifting

You don't even need an sli mobo for that. Just have two full pci-x slots.
