Default Client/Monitoring questions from a noob

Hey, I'm new to folding and i'm running into trouble getting my video card to fold. I got my CPU to fold with SMP and can monitor it using HFM.net also got an HD 5870 that i'd like to put to good use, but I can't get it to work using GPU2 (using the -forcegpu ati_r800 switch). It kept on trying to connect to a work server, but for whatever reason, couldn't.

I'm currently using the F@H v7 beta client to get my 5870 to fold, but I read that it doesn't report the correct PPD. To simplify the PPD submission, I added my CPU in folding @home using the SMP mode but it's folding much more slowly (~6k PPD vs 170 ppd with F@Hv7).

Any hints to what's going on and how I can maximize the PPD for the team would be much appreciated.

The current AMD / ATI client uses a good portion of CPU cycles which is why you are getting bad performance on both. Each is fighting for the same CPU cycles.

Between the i5 750 (SMP client) and the 5870 (GPU2 or V7 client), the SMP client will net you more PPD. As somewhat of a reference, my Q8300 @ 4ghz turned out more PPD than my 5850 using the V7 client.

Thanks for the help. Looks like I'll stick with SMP folding for now. I've been meaning to OC my machine, and this is as good an excuse as any...

Update:

My i5 750 is now running at 3.7 GHz with the help of asus auto overclocking. It was getting 11K running 4 cores on SMP
With 3 cores on SMP and an overclocked 5870 running the V16 client (client type: advanced) , I'm netting 13k: 9k from the GPU and 4K from the CPU.

I'm quite surprised that the extra 1 GHz almost doubled my PPD and almost equally surprised that taking one core out would drop my PPD by 7k PPD.

Anyways, for anyone that's interested, I used this guide to configure the V16 GPU client, though I didn't bother with WinAFC, setting affinities and priorities manually via the task manager. Make sure you set the client type to advanced like SKYMTL says here to get the best PPD from the GPU.

I suggest you post your voltages just to make sure Asus Auto OCing isn't overvolting your CPU.

Hmm that's a good idea. Don't want to do any permanent damage to my main machine.

My FSB is running at 195 MHz with a 19x multiplier. Memory bus is running at 782.2 MHz

AIDA 64 says CPU core is at 1.3V, PLL is 1.794V, southbridge is at 1.038V, IMC is at 1.3 V, RAM is at 1.5V

The one worrying thing is that my +5V and +5V standby are around 5.15V, though i'm not sure if anything really uses those rails.

My core temps are maxing out at 60C, and I've had it folding for more than a day on SMP now, so I think i'm alright.

GPU on the other hand is running at 85C OC'd at 960/1300. I'm going to give my GPU a break for the night and switch back to SMP so I can sleep.
