My System Specs

Default Just started, a question

Hi

I just set my computer to folding@home. I set up dual gpu and CPU clients and when I ran all three the computer got hot. CPU temp was at 60, motherboard at 39 and gpu temps around 58 for both. Now im worried if leaving it in like this is a good idea. Should I cut down on it? Say just one gpu and cpu.

Haha I see. Yeah this folding business quite intriguing as I know the daunting task of analyzing the process of protein folding for cellular mechanisms especially when I majored in cell biology

That is a nice setup you have there, you should be able to get some good ppd. As Dan mentioned your temperatures, although higher than normal, are still within reasonable levels. Thanks for your contribution, make sure you check out the Chimps Challenge thread!

Your temps are fine. My vid cards are 63c - 74c (I have 8 of them), my 2600K is running 65c. They are all 24/7 folders. You should be fine. You might also be able to add more fans in your case...that will help.

Thanks for joining up! Those temps are fine as the guys mentioned. Also, there may be a Chimp Challenge folding contest soon so keep an eye out!

No problem guys, just happy to contribute. I've decided to go with a single GPU client and a CPU (SMP) client. The 2500k has been OCed to 4.8ghz and the 460s have been OCed slightly so that might contribute to heat as well.

I want to add some more fans but most fan holes are already occupied. Thinking about modding the side window to add fan holes there.

I've seen a couple of my GX2's in the Quad-GX2 box fold at 100c for weeks straight, not ideal but in 2yrs I only had 1/2 of a gx2 die on me (in that rig) Also had a laptop i7-975 fold at 85c for months until I improved the cooling.

If you're going to keep it up and folding 24/7 some other things to think about are case positioning, is it on the floor or on a desk, is there plenty of room in front/behind for the air to enter/exit. Also if its in a smaller enclosed room, try and keep the door open, 24/7 folding can easily increase the amient rooms temps 10c, wich in turn is warmer air trying to cool your components. Dust is also a consideration, cleaner parts cool better. Not sure where you're at but as summer aproaches your temps will increase as ambient room temps go up, unless you have A/C and if you do expect it to work harder.

And if you don't mind a tad more noise bump up the fans on your video card(s).
