Default which card ?

OK..

I just got a free rig that has these slots :

---

The black one is a 4x......video cards work just fine in it for folding , albeit with a performance hit.

So my question is this :

I have 2 cards.
- BFG 8800 gtx (model # bfgr88768gtxe )
- BFG 9800 gtoc (model # bfge98512gtoce )

Which card should I give the x16 slot to ? which will perform better in the 4x slot ?

It won't matter. PCIe bandwidth plays almost no role in folding, and a 4x slot is more than fast enough for even the fastest GPUs. Heck, even a 1x slot can be used with only a 2-5% performance hit in terms of PPD. So base your decision on airflow.

Not from what I've seen.

I had the 9800 in the 4x slot for a week. It's easily producing 25% less than it normally would in a full slot.....

I've had two GTX 280s, one in a 16x and another in a 4x.. in the same machine, both producing the same PPD.

The A8N-E lists it as a 4x port (not a fake 4x that runs at 1x or anything).. so I don't know why it would run slower.
Best thing to do is run them in one configuration, record the PPD after the WU hits 50% or so.. than swap the cards and restart the workunits to determine the highest PPD.

I thought i've read on folding forums anything 4x PCIe and up doesn't make a difference with folding.

Yep.

I have read the same thing a couple times , but for some reason this setup doesn't.My 9800 typically produces 4000-4500 ppd in it's old rig , it' doing 3000 ish in the 4x slot.

I'm outta town in 4 days so I don't have time to play around , I'll just set it up and get it remoted.
