Default sr2 alternatives..

So I'll be upgrading over the next few months , with folding in mind of course.

I've given some thought to the sr-2 motherboard , but Grinder showed me an Intel desktop board I like :

Intel® Workstation Board S5520SC

Now I really don't need 6x PCIe lanes....I only use 2 video cards , one for each monitor , and I dont sli either.

The Intel motherboard seems like what I want....prolly 300$ cheaper than the sr-2 ...

Thoughts ?

Essencially the same dually board I also use, the Supermicro X8DAi. Upside is ultra-stability (even while folding), downside is no overclocking at all.

I basically went for the SR2 because of the oc aspect. I'll probably sell a X8DAi / chips / ram / PSU combo shortly.

I really don't think their are any SR-2 alternatives if you are looking for an SMP monster. Without overclocking PPD won't be all that great unfortunately.

The only alternatives that i've seen, have come from 10e. That's going the G34 way.. it seems the dual 6168s only perform as well as the 980x though - but roast through the 2684's much better though.
We've all read the quad G34's.. which is cost prohibitive, but looks fun as hell. It's overclockable.. only by multiplier on the black edition CPUs tho. (im assuming)

A 980x with a $200 mobo and good 2000Mhz DDR3 for overclocking would be a huge bump from a Q9450, and more 'cost friendly' than a dual xeon setup. You also have to think about resale too down the road - selling a 980x and standard x58 ram and mobo will be way easier than selling a dual xeon setup (that doesn't overclock).

what is next few months ? If it is long enough, the next spring/summer should bring Dozer and a bit farther down the road, LGA2011. If not, you dont have any ''cost effective'' replacement for Sr-2 right now.

Interesting......So overclocking is implied with a dual xeon setup ?

What kinda ppd would a dual processor (with 6 core chips) machine generate at stock speeds ?

I'm gonna be waiting for a couple months anyways , but I wanna get my research started.

I'd say ~55k ppd or so w/ a pair of L5640's, which would be just north of $1100 for the CPU's. An overclocked 980x would pull nearly the same at around the same price. But be significantly faster @ single threaded applications.

My X8DAi with dual E5520s @ stock ran for above 30k ppd.

Which is pretty similar to a ~ 4.2GHz Core i7.

Lets all chip in and get a HWC Supermicro 2026tt-h6rf loaded with 8 hexacores (96 threads, in a 2u rack height) Should only run about $20k, do a full rack of them for about $200k including UPS's. Hmm what were tonights lottomax numbers?
