A 6 core/ 12 thread 970/980 @ 4Ghz will do 55-60k PPD on a good day.
Doing simple math here, 4Ghzx12= 48.. vs 3.16x16=50.56... Now, it's not a direct comparison here because of all the variables with ram timings and bus speed and such, but I would gather the dual quad core box would be near the 970/980x in performance.. and be around the 50k mark. But that's just a guess.

You can get a 970 for $500 + $80 ram, $140 mobo, $50 case, $50 hdd, $100 PSU.. and be around the $950 mark. (add in a cooler, etc)
The 970 would use less power overall, and be easier to resell down the road - I know which path I would take.

That's a pretty compelling argument for a i7 970. Were you thinking of a used i7 970 for $500? They seem to go for ~$880 online.

i7 970 is like $400 ish due to Intel Retail edge program.
