I don't know much about these SR-2s but have you tried the other socket? Weird things happen with bent pins, etc.

Also, I wonder what bios options can be relaxed that allow the two cpus to communicate with the memory, or with themselves?

Hey Chris, yeah - i've been trying to wrap my head around this too. I pulled the second CPU out and the first one by itself works ok. I then swapped CPUs in socket 0, and the other CPU works fine in the board too.
I've been folding on the CPU all night, and currently getting 70k PPD out of a 6900 (which is pretty damn good too)

I'm beginning to think it may be another faulty board? I'm really not looking forward to another RMA.
As for bent pins.. because of the last time I RMA'd, i've been crazy careful with the CPUs - more than normal. I've double and triple checked the pins on the motherboard and everything looks ok from that end.

Thinking of going back to Air cooling. What would be the more trouble free solution for the Sr- ? I would like no to have to change XEON back plate if possible.

Megahalems do not require changing the backplate.

EDIT: They also have no problem keeping my E5645's @ 3.8GHz.

Xeon backplates easily removed. Just keep plastic socket cover on with hinge clip in relaxed position. (not clamped down.)

Yeah I did change it originally to try a stock intel heatsink and then went back to water cooling with the Xeon backplate. I just dont feel like doing it again, if I can skip it !

I have dual CM 212+ with two Scythe SFLEX 1600rpm fans on them.. and runs 3.8Ghz on my 5645's no problem. You know, when I can get a program to work running all 24 cores.

NCIX had a big sale on Megahalems three weeks ago (I missed it...), and now back ordered.. they would be my first choice.
If you're looking for cheap - the Corsair A70s work very well.. and dirt cheap on NCIX right now. They would be my second choice.
Noctua D14's are probably the best air cooler for it, but expensive.

As for my SR2 update, I'm sick as a dog right now, so installation of linux will have to wait til im better.. hopefully this weekend I can take a crack at my SR2 again.

I already have one of mine down for stress testing. Should be back operational tomorrow though.
